Types of accommodation

Wherever you decide to study you will have a choice of where to live and will need to consider carefully which option will best suit your needs. The main types of accommodation students opt for are outlined below.

Halls of residence
This is accommodation typically found on the college or university site, where lots of full-time students live.

Private accommodation
Many students choose to live in rented accommodation close to their place of study. You could either live alone or in a shared house.

Staying at Home
With the increased costs associated with studying in Higher Education (HE), more and more students are opting to live at home, study locally and save money.

By selecting this option you may be able to enjoy luxuries such as home cooking and having your laundry done, although we can't guarantee that your mum will still be happy to wash your pants when you're over 21.

It's worth bearing in mind that you won't gain as much independence as you would if you moved away from home, and you may find it harder to enjoy the full student lifestyle led by some of your course mates.

Also, you may find that travel from home to your place of study is less convenient than from student housing, which is often in close proximity to campuses and departments.

If you are a mature student with work or family commitments this is likely to be the only option you can consider and you will find many others in the same situation.

Host families
Students at York College have the option of living with a family/house owner. Students can decide whether they want a breakfast and evening meal provided or would rather cater for themselves.

Short stay accommodation
There may be occasions when you need to find somewhere in the York area to accommodate yourself, a family member, or a friend for a short period of time.
