Driving Safely Follow these tips to ensure you stay safe while driving your car:
- Don't leave valuables visible when you’re driving or parked - this invites theft. If your in-car music system has a removable front, take it with you when you park.
- Always lock your car, even when in a filling station.
- Keep a road map, some change, a phone card, a torch and spare petrol can (safety approved) in the car.
- Check petrol, oil and tyres regularly - especially before a long journey.
- If your car breaks down, pull off the road as far as you can and switch on your hazard warning lights. If you have a mobile phone, remain in the car and call for help. If you do not have a mobile, walk to the nearest phone remembering to note landmarks, road names etc. On motorways head carefully to an emergency telephone. Phone your breakdown organisation, family or friends in the vicinity if available, or the police.
- Park in a well-lit area especially if you don't intend to return to your car until after dark.
- When you return to your car, have your keys ready and check the back seat before you get in.
