Financial Help for Students
There’s a range of government and institutional grants and loans which you may be entitled to while you are a full-time student.

Student loans
For students starting Higher Education in 2008, the following two types of student loan are available:

1) Student loans for tuition fees - you can apply for a loan to pay your tuition fees. This money will then be paid straight to your college or university by the Student Loans Company on your behalf.

2) Student loans for maintenance – you can apply for a loan every year to cover your living costs, including accommodation, books, food and bills.

You will not have to repay either of these student loans until you are earning over £15,000 and even then you will only pay back 9% of your income over that amount. If your earnings stop or fall below £15,000 at any point your repayments will stop.

For more information about student loans, including details of how much you will be eligible for, how to apply and what your repayments will be, see the DfES Student Support website.
