Having a disability doesn’t limit your chances of success at university or college, especially as nowadays all Higher Education institutions have many ways of providing additional support to ensure that ALL students reach their full potential. At present, around 20% of students in Higher Education have some kind of disability or learning difficulty.
Students with a wide range of conditions come to university or college in York. The Higher York institutions currently support students with specific learning difficulties like dyslexia or dyspraxia; visual and hearing impairments; mobility impairments; mental health problems; cerebral palsy; epilepsy … and many, many more! So it’s likely that, whatever your difficulty, your university or college will be able to help.
The universities and colleges in York have good facilities for students with mobility difficulties and will typically offer this group accommodation in ground floor rooms. Access requirements are also taken into account when lectures and seminars are timetabled.
Disabled students have rights under the Special Educational Needs and Disability Act 2002 (SENDA):
- Not to be treated less favourably than non-disabled students because of their disability
- To have reasonable adjustments made by the institution of their choice so they can live, work and carry out their studies to their full potential
