Information gathering for courses
The best way to start thinking about Higher Education courses is to find out as much information as possible about the different types of course available. Once you've looked at all the usual sources of information (i.e. prospectuses, institutions' websites) there are numerous people you can contact for further details or with any queries.

HE Drop-in sessions
The Higher York Information Officer holds drop-in sessions for anyone interested in finding out about any aspect of Higher Education.  Sessions are held in the shop at  Future Prospects from 1pm - 4pm every Thursday and 4pm - 7pm every first and third Tuesday of the month.  Appointments are not necessary - just turn up.

Central admissions

If you require further information about the entry requirements or admissions procedures for a particular course you should contact central admissions at the institution. You will find their telephone number in the university or college prospectus or on their website.

Department admissions tutors
For more information about the content of a particular course there may be a department admissions tutor you can contact. Typically, this individual will teach in the department and will be able to give you more details about the modules covered on the course, assessment methods and styles of teaching. The contact details for department admissions tutors are usually given in prospectuses - on the same page as the course information. If you are unable to find a contact number, central admissions will put you through to someone teaching on the course.

Careers
You may wish to contact the careers department at the institution you are considering studying at. The careers advisers will be able to inform you about the types of occupation/ further study you can enter with a particular qualification. They will also have information about what past graduates from the course have gone on to do.

Open days
Open days are an excellent way to find out more about particular courses as well as everyday life at the university or college. We would strongly recommend visiting a university or college before applying to study there. Click here for details of forthcoming open days in York.

'Is Higher Education for me?' course
This course is aimed at anyone thinking about studying a degree programme and will provide you with all the relevant information you need to make an informed decision about HE. It will also teach you the study skills (i.e. essay writing, using a library) you will need to successfully study a degree. Click here for more information about the course.

Help
If you require more information about a particular aspect of HE but are unsure who to contact, email the Higher York Information Officer.
