Getting around York

York is a relatively small city and is very easy to get around whichever method of transport you decide to use.

Walking
York city centre is small enough to get around on foot and because the central area is for pedestrians only, there’s no traffic to worry about. Click here for a map of the city centre.

Cycling 
York is the UK's top cycling city, with 15% of York residents, compared to 3% nationally, travelling to work by bike. This is partly due to the fact that York is so cycle-friendly, with dozens of cycle paths and lots of central places to lock up your bike. The fact that you can easily get around the city on a bike could save you hundreds of pounds on public transport. Park and ride
York’s Park and Ride service is an extremely popular way of travelling into and around the city centre. There are currently five park and ride sites on the outskirts of the city centre – all situated on main roads into York. This scheme allows you to park for free in a secured car park and then continue your journey into the city centre on bus. Driving
Due to its proximity to motorways (M62 and M1) and the fact that several main A roads pass through the city centre, York is easily reached by car.
