Registering with a doctor
Once you have enrolled at a college or university you need to register with a doctor as soon as possible. Then if you become unwell you will be able to seek medical treatment immediately. For those of you not familiar with the UK health system, it's free if you are studying full-time and have permission to be in the UK as a student for longer than six months.
Each of the institutions in York has a health centre where you will be able to seek advice on a range of health related matters. At some institutions, particularly if you have a place in halls, you may be able to register with a doctor on campus. Use the links to find out more about the medical services available at your institution, including how to make an appointment to see a doctor or other health professional.
If you are going to be living in private accommodation in York you will need to decide which doctor's surgery to register with. Click here to search for a doctor's surgery close to your accommodation. This website also explains ‘how to register with a doctor' and ‘what you can expect from your doctor'.
There is also an NHS Walk-In Centre situated in the centre of York. This is open seven days a week and offers a nurse-led service for which no appointment is necessary. Click here for more details about the centre.
If you will be leaving York during the Christmas and Easter breaks you should register as a ‘temporary resident' with a doctor close to where you will be staying.
Dentists
You should make sure you are registered with a dentist so you can receive regular check ups on your teeth and gums.
There are costs associated with all dental treatment, whether you register as an NHS patient or a private patient, though the charges related to being a private patient are significantly greater.
Click here to find details of your nearest dental practice. Please note, due to the national shortage of NHS dentists you may be obliged to register privately.
If you need emergency dental treatment contact NHS Direct on 0845 4647 and they will be able to give you details of the dental services available in the area. If you are not registered with an NHS dentist you should be able to seek treatment from a Dental Access Centre. NHS Direct will be able to provide you with details of your local Dental Access Centre.
